Pollack (Saithe)

Pollack belong to the Gadidae family and are closely related to the cod. However, its elongated body is somewhat more elegant. The pollack is pearl-grey with a black snout. Its back is usually darker than the rest of the body. The ventral side of the pollack is white. The pronounced jaw is a particular characteristic.

Pollack mostly prefer to live together in swarms and like colder and temperate waters.

It is a predator which feeds mainly on herring and sprat and sometimes follows its prey over long distances. The young, on the other hand, like to eat the spawn of other fish species. Pollack usually grow to a length of 70 centimetres. However, in exceptional cases, specimens have been known to reach a length of up to 130 centimetres. Pollack can live to the ripe old age 25.
